The book, Our Army Nurses: Stories from Women in the Civil War by Mary Gardner Holland, is a collection of short reminiscences gathered in 1895. It includes a recollection by Lauretta (Cutler) Hoisington. She served as a nurse during the last year of the Civil War. It appears that she married a Hoisington after the war and lived for a time in Rochelle, Illinois. Another reference, written around 1914, has her living in Palo Alto, California. Are there any descendants around still? Maybe we can discuss the English origins of the Hoisingtons soon. Daniel J. But I need help. First what is GEDCOM? Genealogical Exchange _____Communication....? I do use PAF for my data... Second, how can I find out if there are history files like this for other families that I AM researching? I have an older computer with no CD ROM. Is it possible to get the information if you don't have the CD ROM? Third, I'm having a *terrible* time with my Netscape. As soon as I get to a web page I get, "Application Error" and I'm forced to close, log off and try again, when the same problem just repeats. This is extremely frustrating. Is there any way I can retrieve information without using Netscape, just with regular e-mail?? My response: This is probably the right woman. She was born in Ohio. I have two sources that give her last name as Cutler so Harry H. might have it wrong. She served as an army nurse for thirteen months in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She wrote in 1895, "I look to my diary..." Now if I could only track down that diary! Maybe a historical society near Palo Alto? Daniel J. She was born in Ohio. I have two > sources that give her last name as Cutler so Harry H. might have it > wrong. Harry may well be wrong. We've discovered that he made some errors:) When I looked in the index of surnames other than Hoisington, I found; "Cutler - 6", but when I looked at family #6 I found absolutely no Cutler listed. In the "Index of Persons Who Have Borne the Name of Hoisington" though, I find; "Lauretta Cutter - #64" that I quoted you. (There is only one Lauretta, also.) So if Harry really does have a "Cutler", it's not where he says it is:) > She served as an army nurse for thirteen months in Chattanooga, > Tennessee. She wrote in 1895, "I look to my diary..." Now if I could > only track down that diary! Maybe a historical society near Palo Alto? Well, it (your book) sounds very interesting. Yes, maybe a historical society, or maybe there is a Civil War museum?? There must be records of the nurses too. Ohio should be able to point you in the right direction. I had a gg-grandfather, (another line) in the Civil War, taken prisoner at Andersonville, and the State of Vt. sent me copies of his military service from a publication called the "Gazeteer". Ohio may have similar material about the nurses? I'm sure finding the documents will be easier than locating the diary. But it would be *wonderful* if you could find it:) Or you may have already pursued these suggestions. It's always possible if you followed the daughter from the first marriage, forward, the diary *might* have survived, and now be in the possesion of one of her descendants? My mother has several family diaries from the turn of the century and even earlier...So there is hope. I wish you well with it. Bonnie bonnie@Capital.Net ================================================================================== From: Harriette Jensen Subject: Computer/Netscape Problems Date: Thu, 13 Mar 1997 22:42:02 -0800 Hi, Bonnie, GEDCOM is just an ASCII format file for exchanging genealogy data between programs. PAF will export part or all of its database in a GEDCOM format which will make it readable by most other genealogy programs. Second question-- I don't have a CD ROM either, but there are a jillion sites out there with info, for instance the Family TreeMaker site had mucho Hoisingtons on it. That's where I got my first info. And there are volunteers out there on the lists with CDs who will do lookups for you. Third, there are lots of reasons you might be getting the "Application Error" in Netscape, one of which is memory. How much RAM memory do you have? Also, you might want to check the size of your Netscape cache and how often it is cleared out. When I first started using Netscape, I couldn't download anything...I kept getting an error that told me I was out of memory...this after I had just bought what I thought was a HUGE new hard disk! I think I found this info in the HELP option AFTER I had called my kid, the computer whiz, in Michigan. If you still have questions, e-mail me. I'll probably have to get the kid online, but that's OK...he just loves knowing more than I do! I just picked up a load of information this morning. Went surfing on the net and found the Vermont Historical Society's website. Really great! This is what I got: 1) A list of books on Windsor County available through the Vermont Library system with descriptions, locations of books. We may be able to do interlibrary loans on at least some of them. 2) A names and addresses of VT Historical Societies and what types of things they have. 3) A listing of the special collections and their contents. 4) A list of the VT State Archives Then, when I went to the local Family History Center, I printed out all the Hoisington children listed on the LDS IGI CD (what a lot of acronyms!). Fifty-two pages. I know some of them aren't accurate; however, most of them list birthdate, birthplace, and father and mother's name. Lottsa places and names I haven't seen before. As soon as I complete listing out Harry Hoisington's names and dates, I'll start inputting these in the same format so that we will be able to compare and combine them. I'll set up another column for source so we'll know where the info came from. In the meantime, if you have any questions about any of this, give me a holler. I'll be glad to do lookups. I have her listed as the wife of John Horsington, which I believe is true. However, when I was looking over Harrys' book, I realized that she may not have been the mother of John 2 Horsington, b 1690. True?? If so, I see no reference (by Harry) about who the mother of John 2 may have been. Do we know?? Thanks. I think Edris Ells, who was also a Hoisington and a Hoisington researcher, didn't think there was. I'll check the film at the FHC tomorrow when I go. Harriette PS. When I went to "reply" to Bonnie's posting, I noticed that the mailing list address didn't automatically come up in the "To" line. I'll see if I can fix this so that everybody gets all parts of any question/answer/discussion. researching: COMBS, DAVIS, HARDIN, HART, HATFIELD, HOISINGTON, MILLS, MOORE, MORRIS, PERKINS, SPURGEON, and BERGER To subscribe to the HOISINGTON Mailing List, send e-mail to MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu>, no subject line, SUB HOISINGTON in body of message. He married Elizabeth (Shailor) Cockshott prior to 3 July 1711. (a) Birth: This is a rough estimate, based on our knowledge of John (1) and the later history of John (2). Estate papers for one William Hills of Hocanum (just northeast of Wethersfield, CT) state "sometime after Michalmas 1692 he stated that his daughter Phillis should have...the boy Hossington to be at her dispose till he come of full age..." See Charles William Manwaring, A Digest of the Early Connecticut probate records [Hartford, 1904] 1:466,467. Hill's son, Joseph, and John (2) later had two land transactions recorded, further the connection. DATING: The "boy Hossington" referred to would have been old enough to be indentured, as this statement implies, at least twelve in 1692. (b) Marriage: East Haddam Deeds (2:116). John Hoisington of Wallingford deeds to Thomas Robinson land "formerly belonging to Nathaniel Ackly, late of Haddam, deceased, it being one ninth part of the whole estate of sd. Nathaniel Ackley bequeathed by his last will...to Elizabeth Cockshott, the now wife of abovesaid John Hossington."' signed by both John and Elizabeth, 3 July 1711. John and Elizabeth owned the covenant at the First Church, Hartford CT, 15 June 1712. (c) Death: Inventory of John Hossington estate, 15 December 1728 by "Elisha Horsenton realick of John deceased" in Probate file 2878, Farmington, Connecticut State Library). Elizabeth's death is recorded in the Farmington Land records (Book 6:10) as 21 May 1740. Farmington CT Town Records and Hartford First Church Records list the birth of John (2) and Elizabeth's children.
