I need the help from wherever I can get it. Please forward this message, including this paragraph, to any regional mail list that is *willing to accept it*, your Congressperson, the President or anyone else that you think can help with this project. Here is the message. =========== PLEASE HELP PRESERVE OLD NATURALIZATION RECORDS FROM FUTURE DESTRUCTION This is the situation *AS I CURRENTLY UNDERSTAND IT*. Starting in 1906, two identical copies of certain naturalization documents were created by various courts across the United States for each person who went though the naturalization process. The FIRST copy was to be filed indefinitely by the court that did the naturalization. The SECOND copy was sent to the Bureau of Immigration which later became the Immigration & Naturalization Service. When this happened, the records became Federal records even though they may have been created by a State court acting in and for a county. Many large lots of these old records have been transferred to Federal Record Centers for temporary storage. According to what I have been told by an employee at a Federal Records Center, these documents will be held at that facility for 100 years and then destroyed. Please NOTE: I am NOT referring to the National Archives which does have SOME naturalization records. I AM referring to the I. N. S and the Federal Record Centers which should have ALL naturalization records starting with those created in approximately 1906. These are original documents and in many cases the FIRST copies, usually filed at the county level, have been lost, transferred, or destroyed. In MANY cases across the United States, these SECOND copies of the documents are the only ones that still exist. With your help I would like to do whatever is necessary to make sure they are transferred to some type of Archive facility and not destroyed. Before I can get the ball rolling, I must have some background information about just what documents exist at the various Federal Record Centers across the United States. I was told by an employee at the Federal Record Center in San Bruno, California that I would have to get written authorization from the INS office in San Francisco before I was able to obtain more information about the holdings at San Bruno. I have attempted to do that and have been stonewalled at every turn. Letters and email to my Congresswoman, President Clinton, INS offices in San Francisco and Washington DC go unanswered. Finding anyone at the INS office who is willing to return my calls or respond to my letters is impossible. I frankly can not afford to call Washington DC and listen to endless phone menus that will get me nowhere. I am NOT interested in obtaining ANY information about any ONE individual who was naturalized anywhere in the United States. I would just like to know where the courts were located that created the records, what years were covered, where the records are currently stored, and what we can do to preserve them from destruction. I would also like to be able to talk with a government employee who can tell me how to obtain answers to these questions. If anyone is currently working on a plan to preserve these records or can tell me how to make contact with a government official or anyone else who is willing to help me obtain answers to the above questions, please contact me. Here at last are the Hoisingtons in my line. A few of them are duplicates of entries already sent but may have updated info. I also have a lot of info on the female lines (including my grandmother's, of course) if any of you are interested. After I finished this, I realized that it does take some work to put info into this format. If any of you don't have the time, but would like to have your lines put into the database so that everyone will have them, send me a gedcom and I'll do them as time permits. If you are related to any of the following, please let me know. If you have any additions or corrections or additional information, also let me know. Thanks, Harriette PS, the reason I put the birth and death dates in this format is so that they can be sorted by year of ..... PPS, the unknowns listed as Jesse Hawkins' children comes from a statement by my g-grandmother that she had 3 children that died. If I ever find out what number they were in the birth order, I will send an update. =============== First Name Birth Date Death Date Generational Number Source Jesse Hawkins 1824 (23 JUN ) 1894 (23 AUG) 2.01.08.02 Charles 1847 2.01.08.02.01 Lydia Samantha 1849 (7 NOV ) 1931 (14 JAN) 2.01.08.02.02 Franklin B. 1855 (12 MAR ) 1928 (22 JUN ) 2.01.08.02.03 Louisa A. 1852 (19 AUG) 2.01.08.02.04 William Andrew Jackson 1857 (30 JUN) 1933 (9 NOV ) 2.01.08.02.05 Daniel Jesse 1861 (29 JUL) 1913 (1 MAY ) 2.01.08.02.06 Clara Elvira 1863 (8 OCT) 2.01.08.02.07 Samiel 1869 (28 MAY) 2.01.08.02.08 Charles A. 1874 (AUG ) 2.01.08.02.09 Unknown 2.01.08.02.10 Unknown 2.01.08.02.11 Unknown 2.01.08.02.12 William Ellis 1877 (5 JUN) 2.01.08.02.03.01 Bessie May 1883 (30 DEC) 2.01.08.02.03.02 Marion Leroy 1887 (30 MAY) 1917 (12 DEC) 2.01.08.02.03.03 Harry 1890 (9 APR) 1891 (3 JAN) 2.01.08.02.03.04 Rosalee 1903 (27 OCT) 2.01.08.02.03.05 Joseph Ray 1905 (1DEC) 2.01.08.02.03.06 Fanny May 1908 (27 MAR) 2.01.08.02.03.07 Edward Clarence 1910 (14 FEB) 2.01.08.02.03.08 Gertie Dean 1912 (27 AUG) 1936 (22 JUN) 2.01.08.02.03.09 Harry Franklin 1915 (10 JUL) 2.01.08.02.03.10 Etta Almira 1880 (4 AUG) 1972 (24 JAN) 2.01.08.02.05.01 Louis Benjamin 1883 (8 JUL) 1970 (21 JUL) 2.01.08.02.05.02 Arthur E. 1886 (17 MAR) 1965 ( 22 DEC) 2.01.08.02.05.03 Alda Mabel 1887 (30 DEC) 1977 (6 FEB) 2.01.08.02.05.04 Clyde H. 1890 (21 SEP) 1895 (21 SEP) 2.01.08.02.05.05 Claude William 1892 (16 AUG) 1966 (10 SEP) 2.01.08.02.05.06 Jessie M. 1894 (4 OCT) 1896 (11 APR) 2.01.08.02.05.07 Bessie S. 1894 (4 OCT) 2.01.08.02.05.08 Ernest Daniel 1897 (18 FEB) 1979 2.01.08.02.05.09 Nora Fay 1899 (17 SEP) 2.01.08.02.05.10 Dora May 1899 (17 SEP) 2.01.08.02.05.11 Jesse Jefferson 1883 (30 DEC) 1947 (16 NOV) 2.01.08.02.06.01 David Augustus 1885 (24 MAR) 1956 (30 JAN) 2.01.08.02.06.02 Ada 1888 1953 (16 MAY) 2.01.08.02.06.03 Charles William 1890 (31 JUL) 2.01.08.02.06.04 Fred Franklin 1893 (APR) 2.01.08.02.06.05 Grace Amanda 1896 (3 AUG) 1963 (12 OCT) 2.01.08.02.06.06 Clara Alice 1898 (3 NOV) 1964 (30 SEP) 2.01.08.02.06.07 Daniel Allen 1901 (24 APR) 1902 (22 JAN) 2.01.08.02.06.08 Elnora Mae 1903 (6 JUN) 1959 (16 SEP) 2.01.08.02.06.09 Pearl Myrtle 1907 (5 DEC) 1966 (7 JAN) 2.01.08.02.06.10 Jesse A. 2.01.08.02.06.01.01 Ruth Ellen 2.01.08.02.06.01.02 Orvalee 2.01.08.02.06.01.03 Mickey 2.01.08.02.06.01.04 Jean 2.01.08.02.06.01.05 Harry Dean 2.01.08.02.06.01.06 Freddy 2.01.08.02.06.05.01 D.J. 2.01.08.02.06.05.02 Lorean 2.01.08.02.06.05.03 Freda 2.01.08.02.06.05.04 ================ researching: COMBS, DAVIS, HARDIN, HART, HATFIELD, HOISINGTON, MILLS, MOORE, MORRIS, PERKINS, SPURGEON, and BERGER To subscribe to the HOISINGTON Mailing List, send e-mail to MAISER@rmgate.pop.indiana.edu>, no subject line, SUB HOISINGTON in body of message. The first is one of mine: John R. Martin b Nov. 2, 1840 d Jan 16 1903 (8?) Emily L. Clough, His wife b Jan. 8, 1844 d Aug (can't make out the yr.) Nettie Blanchette Martin b May 14, 1869 to (?) Emily is the child of Caira Hoisington, and the sister of Lyman Judson Clough, my g-grandfather. The second I don't recognize, but if it's one of yours, I'd be happy to mail it to you: Charles F. 1856 (8?) - 1918 Eva Hoisington d Nov. 26, 1899 at 19 years I took the photo at Southview Cem. in Randolph Vt. a couple of years ago. We've postponed going to Vermont until May, I think, but if there's anything in particular you'd like, I'll try my best. The priority is to visit the cemetaries, and to get photocopies of all the material on Hoisingtons the man in Randolph has. The first trip will probably be to the Randolph/Rochester/Windsor areas. I have run across at least 4 researchers who have done extensive research on the Hoisingtons (prior to us, of course). They are Harry Hoisington, Almon Kidder, Lyman Copeland Draper, and Edris Ellis. I know that Harry and Edris donated their manuscripts to Salt Lake City and the microfilms are available, but has anyone seen the Draper and Kidder manuscripts? I believe that they were given to the University of Wisconsin, but I don't know if anything was published on their work. Draper founded the organization and is one of most important figures in the annals of American historical societies. Kidder collected excellent information from an earlier generation than Harry Hoisington. You could read through the material in a day (which I have done). No one has done a publication using their papers. I guess that the market is pretty small! What different versions have you heard about John Horsington coming to America? How about information from England? We're up to 14 members :))) This is good news! > Even if you don't have time to put on your info, drop a line just to say hi > and let us know your names (MAISER doesn't list names, just e-mail I'm Bonnie Stevens Dannenberg. I descend from the following line: John, John 2, Ebenezer, Elias, Sayles, Caira, Lyman Judson Clough, Eva May Clough, Margaret Elizabeth Joyal. I was working on my Hoisington line a couple of months ago, with good intentions, but got distracted with another line, (the Joyals). I've been putting together a little booklet of the documentation I have on that line, for the past two months. Which brings me to a couple of questions. Can anyone share the best way of "organizing" information? I now have two filing cabinets in which I use hanging file folders. I'm using different color hanging folders for the male direct lines, and the females are grey. For example, all the Dannenberg (males) are yellow, the Joyal males teal, Hoisinton males red etc. The colored male sections start with the earliest known male in the line and move to the most recent. If any of the female lines are known, a grey folder or section of folders slips in behind the male she's directly connected to. Once I've done that, I start making copies of all the documentation, photos, or whatever I have relating to the line as a whole, and putting it all together into a little "booklet". I bind the booklets with report covers. If I have 25 hanging folders on a line, it's now all combined into one booklet and documents, photos etc. can be seen all in one place rather than having to sort through 25 different folders. I'm also including pedigree charts, family group sheets etc. in each "booklet". I hope to make these booklets for each line I'm working with. I don't eliminate the material/documents in the hanging file folders after I'm finished with the booklets, but the booklets just combine all the info that's in the various folders. What suggestions do you all have about the best way to organize documents, etc.? This brings me to my second question. What genealogy program have you found to be the best? I've been using PAF for several years, and really have no major complaints about it. But I recently bought Family Ties. This one has the ability to print "pretty" pedigrees, using different fonts like Blackletter. It will also print photos on the pedigrees when I get them scanned in. I've also heard about Family Tree Maker, but know nothing about it. Any opinions about which program out there is the best?
