From: Daniel J Hoisington Subject: A Canadian Hoisington Date: Fri, 2 May 1997 10:45:42 PST I just received some information from the American Antiquarian Society. It is a copy of an advertising bookplate from the frontispiece of "Quebec, The Harp, and Other Poems" by W.F. Hawley, published in 1829. The plate reads: J. A. Hoisington & Co. Booksellers, Stationers, Publishers and Binders No. 104, St. Paul Street Montreal It goes on to describe his stock and says that: They have lately made considerable addition to their Printing establishment, by which they will be enabled to Print in the Neatest style and on reasonable terms. Dated September 1829. A ne avenue of research! Daniel Hoisington edinborough@juno.com ======================================================================================= From: Harriette Jensen Subject: Canadian Hoisingtons Date: Sat, 3 May 1997 15:26:39 -0800 Thanks, Daniel. Your posting re: J.A. Hoisington got me in gear finally about the Canadian Hoisingtons. I had received an e-mail a while back from BC, but lost it when my hard disk crashed. So I hied myself up to the Canadian version of Four11 and found 11 Hoisingtons... no e-mail addresses, so I'll write to them via snail mail. While I was on the net, I went through my list of URLs I wanted to check and came back with the info on Hoisington archives at the end of this message. I had read that there were some Hoisingtons who had done missionary work in India, but this is the first documentation of it that I've found. My kid lives in Ann Arbor, so I e-mailed him to check that one out for me. Either that or send me a plane ticket so I can visit him and do research. Harriette tracked me down (I do not know how) and I was curious about my history. I have been reading your emails for the last 2 weeks and boy I did not know this family is so deep in heritage. If someone can help me get started in tracking my tree, I would greatly appreciate it. I thought you might be interested in a letter I received today from Maida Follini, who writes the Folwell/Hoisington Newsletter in Canada. With the letter she included a copy of the January 1996 edition. Harriette ---------------------------------- Dear Harriette Jensen, Thank you for replying to my E-mail message. I do not have e-mail, but a friend of my son's sent it for me. I am an amateur genealogist, interested in family history. I trace my Hoisington forbears as follows, from the immigrant, John Hoisington who came from England: 1. John Hoisington (or Horsington or Hossington) b. c. 1650-55. 2. John Hoisington b. 1693 d. 1728 3. James Hoisington b. 1721 4. Job Hoisington, b. 1762, tomahawked at the Battle of Black Rock, near Buffalo, N.Y., Dec. 31, 1813. 5. Rev. Henry Richard Hoisington, b. 1801, d. 1858, missionary to Ceylon. 6. Rev. Henry Richard Hoisington Jr., b. 1836 in Vaddukoddai, Ceylon. d. 1917. 7. Frederick Reed Hoisington, b. 1868, d. 1951. 8. Elizabeth Folwell Hoisington, b. 1900, d. 1969. 9. Elizabeth Maida Barton Follini, b. 1930. (myself). I am interested in finding out if possible who John Hoisington the immigrant's parents were, and what part of England he came from. I love to hear about collateral branches of the Hoisingtons, and have quite a lot currently in my file. Are you a Hoisington descendant? I publish a family newsletter, The Folwell/Hoisington Descendants Newsletter and enclose a copy. The main family lines I am researching are the Hoisingtons, the Folwells and the Piersols. Most of these ancestors lived in the U.S. or came over from England. However, one of my ancestors was a Tory, Simon Baxter, and moved to New Brunswick after the Revolution. (but his daughter, from whom I am descended, was married and stayed in N.Y. State.) I also have some Piersol collaterals in Ontario. My understanding is that all Hoisingtons in North America are descended from one of the three grandsons of John 1st, the immigrant: John 34d, James and Ebenezer. I am descended from James. Are you in one of these lines? I would love to hear from you and hear what you are working on. Since I do not have e-mail I need to be contacted by snail mail and of course it costs a few cents more to send a letter from the U.S. to Canada. I hope to hear from you. Best wishes. Date: Sun, 25 May 1997 23:41:56 -0800 Hi, All. Speaking to you from Rootsweb. You're all obviously subscribed or you wouldn't be receiving this e-mail. There are some changes to the commands that are used for the list. I have added the welcome messages below. And there are two types of lists, mail mode (the one we've been using) and digest mode (where messages accumulate for a certain number of days or messages). If you want to get the digest mode, you have to request it (see below). Don't forget to change your nickname address if you have one to reflect the new address at Rootsweb. Glad to be back, Harriette ================================================================================ There are currently two welcome messages, one for HOISINGTON-L and one for HOISINGTON-D. New HOISINGTON-L (mail mode) subscribers receive: Welcome to the HOISINGTON mailing list! You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to HOISINGTON as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to HOISINGTON-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to HOISINGTON-L-request@rootsweb.com. 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to HOISINGTON-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to HOISINGTON-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to HOISINGTON-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. For your verification, a transcript of the original subscription request is included below. And new HOISINGTON-D subscribers recieve: Welcome to the HOISINGTON mailing list! You are currently subscribed in "digest mode", which means that several postings made to HOISINGTON will be consolidated together and sent to you as a single large message.
