Haven't written in a while because I've been out scouting up Hoisington info. Made several contacts in IL and OH that are yielding a lot of married-in type info. Also, I will be going to Ann Arbor MI to visit my son in late September. While I'm there, I will be doing some research at the Univ. of Michigan library, where there's a large cache of early Hoisington info. Has anyone else been there? Also, if there's anything in particular you would like me to look for, let me know before September 10th. Hi, all. I received this response from someone on the list and wanted to take a minute to discuss the concept of "Armchair Hoisingtons". I know that you all have lives that keep you busy. My son, Ian, says I'm "obsessed" with genealogy and he's probably right. I prefer to call it "intensely interested", but that's just semantics. Anyway, I know that genealogy is fairly down the list on most people's priorities, so I don't expect you to post every day. But once in a while would be nice , if only to let me know that you haven't "joined the ancestors". Actually, I would really like to be of more help to those who, like the person who wrote the quote, "who are not sure how do this [genealogy] via the web". Also, I wouldn't mind doing a little online research for all of us....I just need to know what it is you're looking for. So speak up (and if you're shy, send me a personal e-mail at ). I'll try to address your issues and promise not to use your name if you don't want me to. Harriette ====================================================================================== From: MR BRAD E HOISINGTON Subject: Hey There. Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 12:22:04, -0500 Here is my test on the list. I had a different address for sending out so let's see if this works. I had been busy due to some recent career changes. (Yup, another Hoisington is on his own in the employment world). I wandered in to the Geneology area of the non- local library (closest decent one is 22 miles away), looks like the search is on. To give everyone a little of my background, my name is Brad Hoisington, located in Silver Lake, WA. I was born and raised in CA Bay Area. My parents are Paul and Dean Hoisington. My dad's dad is Earl Hoisington of Sonora, CA. He used to be a long time logger in the Sierras. Dad tells me these stories of spending the summers with Earl and staying at the logging camps. The pictures that I remember were neat. That is all I know at this point. My dad does not remember to much beyond his dad either so it is ground zero from here. If anyone can help, send back message to me. bh :) ====================================================================================== From: Harriette Jensen Subject: Re: Hey There. Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 19:26:01 -0700 (PDT) Hi, Brad. Good to hear from you. But you could have picked an easier name than Earl. There are a dozen Earl Hoisingtons in my database born 1875 on and at least 2 of them died in CA. Let's start with those and see if anything fits. Earl Malcom Hoisington (b.10 Apr 1893, d. 10 Nov 1918) probably isn't it because apparently he died in service (Aeronautic Signal Corps) during WWI. Earl Parmley Hoisington (b. 18 Jan 1881, d. 7 Jul 1934 Bakersfield CA) looks good. Married Harriet Amy McEwen on 11 Oct 1906 in Los Angeles CA . They had 3 children and lived in Redondo Beach in 1931 but had moved to 1st St. in Bakersfield by 1934. The children's names were: Rowena E., b. 11 Nov. 1907 Earl P. Jr., b. 15 Aug 1909 Harriet A., b. 15 Sep 1913 That the one? Hope it is because I've got info all the way back to John I. ===================================================================================== From: Mark Frieden Subject: Major Joab Hoisington (sorry it's long). Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 21:46:25 -0700 Hi, I'm new to the Hoisington mailing list. I've been E-mailing Harriette for a little while and I'm finally posting my first message to the list. My Hoisington background info can be found at http://www.rtd.com/~mfrieden/Family.html I'm posting what info I have on Major Joab Hoisington. I have this file in MS Word 97 format if anyone wants it sent to them as an e-mail attachment. Ok here it is: Chronology and outline history of Major Joab Hoisington's rangers: 1 December 1775: Joab Hoisington holds Captain's Commission in the Cumberland County N.Y. Militia. 23 July 1776:New York Congressional resolve establishes "Ranging Companies" in all frontier counties. Purposes are scouting, patrol and local defense. Two hundred fifty two men are quota from Cumberland and Gloucester counties, and their areas of service are Cumberland, Gloucester and Charlotte counties only. These are not Militia. 24 July 1776:Joab Hoisington commissioned Major of Cumberland-Gloucester Rangers. September 1776:Captains Wait, Hatch and Strong muster their Ranger companies (rolls are known). There is no evidence that the company Captained by Day / Seeley actually mustered. 19 September 1776:General Horatio Gates orders Wait's company out on guard and road building duty (with Col. Barrett on the Crown Point Road). Hoisington refuses, stating that this violates the men's enlistment agreements (which it in reality did not). He orders them instead to join him at Newbury. Sept. - Nov. 1776:Rangers scouting between the Upper Connecticut River and Canada. They say they won't serve unless N.Y. pays them, and General Jacob Bayley in command of that militia district supports their position. There is no documentary evidence of this yet, but a secondary source notes that Hoisington was sending intelligence reports to Generals Schuyler and Gates at Ticonderoga during this period. Dec. - Jan. 1776/77:Joab Hoisington travels to Fishkill to petition N.Y. Congress meeting there for pay for his troops. 11 January 1777:Hoisington asks same congress for some funds so that he can return to his command. 24 February 1777:Col. Bedel (commanding the New Hampshire Rangers, also stationed at or near Newbury) reports Hoisington to be dead. He also noted that the Rangers hadn't done much since they had been there, but it isn't clear whether he meant before or since the death of their Commanding Officer. 4 March 1777:General Schuyler recommends to N.Y. convention that since Hoisington's Rangers had signed up for the duration of the war, but were presently idle, they should be put under Continental command so that Schuyler could use them as scouts. Recall that at this time the Americans were anticipating a summer invasion by British forces out of Canada, and were anxious to know whether it would come by way of the Champlain-Hudson valley, or down the Connecticut River. 18 March 1777:Resolve in reorganizing the Rangers was passed by the N.Y. Congress. A Commission is also set up to insure that they would get paid this time. 21 May 1777:A new company of 152 Rangers is re-enlisted, to function as scouts and messengers. Their territory is still a part of N.Y., but the relationship weakens as the new state of Vermont is forming (Jan. to July, 1777). Includes old Cumberland-Gloucester Counties. Historical background: Hoisington's was a ranger unit organized in 1776 by New York State under the command of Major Joab Hoisington. Ranger units in the American Revolution were similar to militia units in their lack of uniforms but they differed in their duties (scouting and spying on the enemy, not drilling or linear tactics), their term of service (selective and voluntary, not required) and location (local self-defense, not non-local). Ranger units also had a reputation for being unruly and undisciplined and were not held in great favor by regular line officers. Major Joab Hoisington was a militia officer who had fought in the French and Indian War with the First and Second Connecticut Regiments. At the beginning of the Revolution he was living in Woodstock, Cumberland County (now located in Vermont). At the time, Cumberland and Gloucester Counties were called the Hampshire Grants as both New York and New Hampshire claimed them. Hoisington was appointed by the New York Provincial Convention to recruit a ranger unit in these two counties. The unit consisted of three companies, each commanded by a captain with a first and second Lieutenant, Sergeant and Corporal. The unit existed for under a year, from August of 1776 to July of 1777. Hoisington died February of 1777 from small pox. Captain Benjamin Wait tried to keep the unit together but it was broken up and its members joined other regular and ranger units from the New England area after Cumberland and Gloucester Counties became part of Vermont. Please see A. Theodore Steegmann, 1982 - New York Rangers in the Hampshire Grants, 1776-1777, Vermont History Vol :238-248 for more details on the history of the unit. The Ranger interpretation: While it existed, Hoisington's was composed of men who operated not as a line unit but as scouts patrolling the woods for up to two weeks per patrol. As such, they were never issued uniforms and presumably wore civilian clothes suitable for scouting. We know the names of the men in the three companies. They appear to be primarily of British extraction (English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish but also German and Dutch). Hoisington was from the Upper Connecticut River Valley and most of the initial recruits were from this area. Muster Roll of Major Joab Hoisington's Rangers: Captain Benjamin Wait: Company: Lieut. Besides the historical info, it was interesting to note that at least one, and possibly two, of the men in Captain Wait's company later became related to the Hoisingtons by marriage. Mathew Hammond married Hannah Hoisington (daughter of Ebenezer) and his son Reubin married Betsey Hoisington (daughter of Abishai). Polly Hoisington (daughter of Verlina [Joab's 4th son]) married a John Lyon in 1818. Does anyone know whether Zebulon was his father? For those that might not know, Bliss and Isaac were Joab's sons. At the time of his death, they were abt 15 and 18 years old. Harriette > >Muster Roll of Major Joab Hoisington's Rangers: > >Captain Benjamin Wait: > Company: > Lieut. Eilsha Hawley > Lieut. In the fall and winter I should have time to spend more time on-line.:) I would also like to request a discussion, (if it would be helpful to anyone else on list) of on-line research. When I try to visit a lot of the genealogy Web sites, I get error messages and am forced to close. Can I "fix" this? Should I buy more RAM? Should I just give up until I upgrade to a more powerful hard drive? It's very frustrating. Any suggestions? Also, I had to postpone my Hoisington research trip to Windsor Vt, this summer. On July 6, 1997, 6:45 am, Rose Amelia O'Reilly-Hoisington was born into this world. Her line of ancestors are as follows: Robert, Williams, Jr.Eileen O'Reilly Robert Williams, Sr. Pamela Cuff Robert Scott Stella January William Harlow James Edward Orrace Orange Ebenezer John Horsington By the way, I discovered that my grandfather Robert Scott traveled straight from Vermont to White Salmon, WA, and began the first line of gas stations and other businesses in that area. Also, as a child my dad used to have an imaginary friend named "Mr. Orange"! I wish I could find out more about that story. Oh! One more thing...I was doing some research into the origins of Horsington and Horsa. I found out that Horsa was a Norse invader who with his older brother Henga(?) first helped the British but later conquered them (this was right after the time of King Arthur). Does anyone know more about these stories? Thanks, Rob Rob Hoisington Portland, OR robh@teleport.com This thread: ===================================================================================== From: Harriette Jensen Subject: A New Horsington Date: Fri, 29 Aug 1997 23:39:43 -0700 (PDT) Congratulations, Rob and Eileen! I figured that the new baby would take lots of time and there would be many sleepless nights. Well, now we have at least three Hoisingtons among us who are descended from William Harlow. Regarding your question, Horsa and Hengist were supposed to be gg-grandchildren of Woden and , according to Harry Hoisington, "The Horsingtons of England have as much right to claim descent from the Gods as have any of the Royalty of Europe, who base their 'Divine Rights' on descent from Woden, the legendary God of War." So, welcome to the new Godess! Harriette ===================================================================================== From: MR BRAD E HOISINGTON Subject: Hoisington Stuff Date: Sat, 30 Aug 1997 10:05:39, -0500 Congrats Rob on the new addition of Hoisington. We need as many as possible. My little one year old is running like crazy, wobbling all over. We just found out we are adding to the population and expect another to show his or her face in April '98. Here we go, another Hoisington, growing like weeds. To Harriette and everyone else. I found my line is short right now. It goes as follows: Me, Brad Hoisington married to Kevlyn My dad, Paul Roy Hoisington married to Dean Thompson My gdad, Earl Wayne Hoisington married to several. Earl's brother is Lloyd Hoisington. My dad does not remember that much farther past Earl and Lloyd. Our Hoisington line is one of removing themselves from their family to find happiness. If you can give me geneology web sites, etc., etc., it would be great to start the search. May be I can get back as far as Rob, connected to the Norse fighters. What rebels we are at times. Take care everyone. When I first started working on my Hoisington ancestors, I had no idea that they had been in America for so long. It seemed as though the clan had just sprouted out of the ground in the Mid-West because my grandmother had never mentioned any Hoisingtons who had lived in other than Oklahoma. I had a vague idea that they might have been in Kansas because she mentioned the Land Run. So I know what you mean by "removing themselves." But don't give up. Each tiny piece of information may be the one that connects you into the database. For instance, your uncle's name is new to me. I checked and I have a Lloyd E. Hoisington born 9 Sep 1914 in Rosalia WA, but no Earl listed for that family. Could he be yours? I'm only aware of one Hoisington web site at this point, ;, which belongs to Mark Frieden. Mark and I are still working on his Daniel/Mary link. I think I mentioned that I would like to start a Hoisington web site, but I think it will have to wait until I get back from Michigan. If I post all the Hoisington data in my database, it may take more than the one 2mg web site my ISP gives me, so I need to look into alternatives. If anyone else is interested in working on this, we could have several sites all linked together. I am more than willing to help anyone with the basic html coding to do this. What I do by way of searching is to subscribe to as many of the rootsweb geographical and Hoisington-related surname lists as I can tolerate (my mailbox is always crammed) and periodically use the search engines to find websites with any mention of Hoisington, Horsington, Hissington, etc. The geographical lists that I use are for Vermont, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and Texahoma (TX and OK). Recently, several of them had Roll Call, in which the list members put out all the names that they are searching for. That's how I came up with the spouses I recently posted. (By the way, Susan, I am not ignoring your posting. I have several pages of Jennie Cole's ancestors, including one who participated in the Boston Tea Party and fought at Bunker Hill. Give me your new address and I will send you a copy. Any one else interested?) If anyone would like to post a list of their related surnames and locations (if you know them) here, I would be glad to include them in any Roll Calls. The last time I used the search engines, I came up with over 600 mentions, about 1/3 of them for Hoisington KS, but found several Family TreeMaker and Gendex sites with Hoisington on them. I also have many of the surnames I am looking for in my signature line. That has brought me a significant number of e-mails, mostly looking for Hatfields, but a few who say things like "I used to work with a guy named Hoisington", etc. Right now, I am corresponding with people who have Haselton surnames they are searching. Birdie posted a possible Southern connection on the Combs Mailing List for this spelling variation, and I am looking for a Hoisington connection in the North and Mid-West. I came across one in VT that has some of the same related surnames, but we haven't found a Hoisington/Horsington connection yet. It's also possible there are more Horsington descendants than just the ones from New England and I need to investigate this further. If any of you are on any of the Southern geographical lists, let me know and I will give what little info I have right now so that you can post it. That's it for now. I just got some information on Bertha Linscott (another spouse), which I will be posting later on this weekend, so keep tuned. Harriette ===================================================================================== From: Harriette Jensen Subject: HOISINGTON_MAILING_LIST - Correction Date: Sat, 30 Aug 1997 09:32:17 -0700 (PDT) Sorry, Susan. I said I had been researching spouses for 3 William H. Hoisingtons and it was hard keeping them straight! Well, I gave you the wrong ancestor info for Jennie Cole. Her ancestor did NOT participate in the Boston Tea Party.... he kept a tavern at Plymouth Colony.... but I still have several pages of info I can send you with Rev. War connections, etc. Harriette
