I love lookups and I'm beginning to love CDs (Guess I'll have to break down and get a CD reader). The following came in today from Gail Eagle. If you have any questions about the abbreviations, give me a hollar. I also requested records for Cutter, Hughes, Coleman and Summers in Wayne Co., but they don't match anyone in my database. If you're interested, let me know and I'll send them to you. BIRTH RECORDS WAYNE CO. Got a couple of bounces on that last message. This has been happening all to frequently lately, and I have a feeling that you ARE still out there and that it's just the flaky state of the net. So, I've decided to start numbering the messages so that you will know if you have not received all of them. Oh, BTW. What Bonnie said about the age of her ancestor got me to thinking. All previous guesses as to the birthdate of John Horsington were 1650-55. According to this article, that would make him at most 16. It's unlikely that a 16 year old boy would have such a position, so it probably means that John was born MUCH earlier OR that we're dealing with another John, possibly his father. The saga continues. Harriette ===================================================================================== From: Lou Tharp Subject: Unidentified subject! Date: Tue, 04 Nov 1997 11:26:20 -0600 Hi all! The following came through our school group and wanted to share it. I went searching for an ancestor, I cannot find him still. He moved around from place to place and did not leave a will. He married where a courthouse burned. He mended all his fences. He avoided any man who came to take the U.S. census. He always kept his luggage packed, this man who had no fame. And every 20 years or so, this rascal changed his name. His parents came from Europe. They should be upon some list of passengers to the USA, but some how they got missed. And no one else in this world is searching for this man. So, I play Geneosolitaire to find him if I can. I'm told he's buried in a plot, with tombstone he was blessed; but the weather took engraving, and some vandals took the rest. He died before the county clerks decided to keep records. No family Bible has emerged, in spite of all my efforts. To top it off, this ancestor, who caused me many groans, Just to give me one more pain, betrothed a girl named Jones. Happy hunting. ===================================================================================== From: Harriette Jensen Subject: HOISINGTON_MAILING_LIST -Message #2 Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 21:53:29 -0800 (PST) >To top it off, this ancestor, who caused me many groans, >Just to give me one more pain, betrothed a girl named Jones. At first, I my reasoning was that John was too young, but then I started looking closely at the notes I have on references to John. This is what I came up with in the way of dates: 1650-55 ? Born 1662 Juryman in York Co. VA 1675/76 Served In MA militia? prior to 1684 Held local office in Suffolk County, Long Island 1684 Married (in Long Island?) 1692 ? Died. (Will of "John of Long Island" probated) 1706 "Shipper" to VA from Bristol 1713 "Shipper" to NY from Bristol So, even though there are some overlapping dates between the events in VA and New York/New England, it still looks as though there were multiple John Horsingtons, one who was in New England from at least 1675 to 1692, one who was in VA from at least 1662, and (if that 1713 date is not a typo) one in New York after the New England John was dead. Does anybody have access to "The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1776", which is where the reference (on a CD which included it) came from? But when you think about it, you couldn't buy 13 books for 20 or 30 dollars, especially since I'm sure many of these are out of print, which would raise the price of a book considerably. So now I think the cost of CD's is extremely reasonable... :) Anyway, hopefully we'll get some valuable information from it, but you all will have to bear with me cause I'm still trying to learn my way around using the CD's:) Bonnie - ===================================================================================== From: Harriette Jensen Subject: Re: HOISINGTON_MAILING_LIST- Msg #5 - Who's on First? AGLL lists one volume at $34.95 and there are 3-4, I can't remember. Definitely makes the price of the CD reader look more attractive. My name is Harriette Jeanne Hardin McDonald Jensen (which means I've been married twice and divorced twice, so decided I wasn't good at marriage). Born 6 Sep 1940 (which means I'm getting old). I've had two children, David Alexander McDonald (b. 14 Aug 1961 San Jose, CA; d. 15 Aug 1989 San Jose, CA) and Ian Andrew Jensen (b. 6 Sep 1966 San Jose, CA). No grandchildren yet. I try not to be too pushy about that with Ian. Just told him ONCE that I would like to have some before I was too old to spoil them. I work as a tech writer for a contract agency writing web pages for a major pc maker (which is one of the reasons I haven't gotten around to putting up one for the Hoisingtons yet). Got into the business through the back door, as I got a Special Major in the Liberal Arts (Creative Writing and Early Childhood Education) from the best little hippie school around, New College at San Jose State University (gotta have a bumper sticker made up!). After taking the EST training and deciding I should live my dreams, I lived in a log cabin for a few months in the Sierras, which was beautiful and scary at the same time. I came back to live in San Jose and am still here 20 years later (Got any suggestions where I can make a living and still live in the country?) I have been a volunteer grief counselor at the Centre for Living with Dying for about 8 years now (which is definitely NOT as dreary and morbid as it sounds) and I have a semi-civilized labrador named Morris (can't figure out why I sit looking at this box all the time when I would have much more fun taking him for a walk). So, now that you know all about me, who's next? (other than that we'll get to "know" each other) Someday we will be the ancestors, such as we are now researching, and maybe some one will be researching US! :) So we should tell them who we are.:) I was born Bonnie Jean Stevens on February 13, 1947 in Hampton Virginia. I grew up in Cabot Vermont. I married Peter Dannenberg on June 24 1967 and we have been married 30 years this past June. No accolades for that "accomplishment" really, we're just both too stubborn to give in and give up. Anyway, we have two daughters, Allison Paige, b Dec. 21, 1970 and Stephanie Brooke b June 27, 1973. Two grandchildren, Deborah Lynn Walnicki b Dec 23 1991, daughter of Allison, and Alexander Peter Monahan b Nov 12 1992, son of Stephanie. The grandchildren are truly a joy:) Allison is an LPN and quickly found she needed further education. She's in her second year of Community College and plans to transfer to SUNY next fall. If I might be allowed to brag just a bit, she's been on the Presidents List for excellent grades every semester.:) Stephanie is an artist, and enjoys doing Magic Shows. She's a single mom, and she and Alex live with us. I don't have a "paying" job, I've had the luxury of taking care of the house and kids for 30 years. I enjoy gardening, reading, the computer of course, genealogy, and cats. I've bred and shown Siamese and Balinese (long haired Siamese) cats for the past 20 years or so. I'm very active on a Feline discussion list, and was just show manager for a "Virtual Cat Show". If you'd like to see my cats, you can go look at the "Show" at: http://www.islandnet.com/~jbrooks/97catshow/best.htm All proceeds from the VCS and our "Craft Fair" went to the "Emergency Fund" to help cats in need. I live in the Helderberg Mountains outside Albany New York. Like Harriette, I enjoy the country. I guess you can take the girl out of Vermont, but you can't take Vermont out of the girl:) I was born a century or so too late...I love "old" things...like my 100 year old wood cook stove in the kitchen, things like that. (And yes, I do have a "modern" stove too:) My first Hoisington ancestor is Caira Hoisington, daughter of Sayles Hoisington and Abigail Davis. Caira was born on March 3 1815, (probably in Windsor, Vt.). She married James Madison Clough on Dec. 18, 1834. She is my gg-grandmother. She is the mother of Lyman Judson Clough b April 6, 1850. Caira died on July 25, 1891 and is buried in Randolph Vermont. Lyman is the father of Eva May Clough, my maternal grandmother. I have photos of Caira, James, Lyman and Eva if anyone can receive attachments and has a way to view them. Searching for Caira's ancestry had me running in circles for years. The "Clough" genealogy gave no clues, just her name. Her marriage certificate did not state who her parents were. The State of Vermont insisted they had no birth certificate for her. When Harriette first started Hoisington-l, I still had nothing except her name, Caira Hoisington. I was fascinated by Caira. I was obsessed with finding out "who she was". And I was *frustrated* with finding out who she was. Then I attended a Clough reunion. I happened to mention in *passing* how frustrated I was about not being able to find any data on Caira's ancestry. The person I was speaking to said, "We have a bunch of Hoisington data. You're welcome to look it over." Well, what she had was Harry Hoisington's genealogy. It was like buried treasure to me. Finally after years of dead ends, here was Caira's ancestry all presented by Harry in his five carbon copies.:) So I finally connected. I suppose if I was a better genealogist I would have found it before, but oh, you wanted to talk about the *present*, yes?? :) John Horsington Mary Stanborough John 2 Horsington Elizabeth Shalor Ebenezer Hoisington Elizabeth Miller Elias Hoisington Mary Stowell Sayles Hoisington Abigail Davis Caira Hoisington James Madison Clough Lyman Judson Clough Ellen LaPoint Eva May Clough Joseph Theophilus Joyal Margaret Elzabeth Joyal Warren Willard Stevens Bonnie Jean Stevens Peter Bernard Dannenberg I hope I got it right this time! :) Bonnie - ===================================================================================== From: Bonnie Dannenberg Subject: Re: HOISINGTON_MAILING_LIST- Msg. #6 Re: The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1776 on CD Date: Fri, 07 Nov 1997 09:20:45 -0500 >Bonnie, > >If all of the volumes are on the CD, the price is MORE than reasonable. >AGLL lists one volume at $34.95 and there are 3-4, I can't remember. >Definitely makes the price of the CD reader look more attractive. > >Harriette I hope that's the case, that they're all on it. I remember seeing this set mentioned on another list, some time back and I remembered "around" $100 (or more). But I can't remember if it was for the actual books, or for CD's. It might have been for books, because I didn't have a CD drive at that time, and remember thinking that I'd like to get the set, but the price was a *bit* steep:) I can live with the $35...but $100 plus I'd have to think long and hard before ordering... BTW, not Hoisington related, but I'm also looking for "The History of Newbury Vermont", (for Nelson's and Tuttle's) and the place I ordered this CD doesn't have it. If anyone has any suggestions about where I could locate it I'd be grateful. (I think the other I need is "The History of Amesbury (sp) MA.") I've had Michigan on the brain recently. Ever since I decided to go there to visit my kid and do "a little research". Good news. The Bentley Library finally sent me a notice that they had completed copying the Civil War letters between Susan Melissa Hoisington and her husband, Benjamin Franklin Wells....190 pages... and would I please send them money. Hopefully, the letters will get here sooner than the 6 weeks it took to copy them. Secondly, the copy of the Complete Index to the 1893 Atlas and Directory of Lapeer County, Michigan that I sent for finally arrived. Lookups, anyone? The 1880 census for MI was destroyed, so the Lapeer Gen Soc put together this index. It contains lists of landowners and residents by 1)township, 2)township and section, and 3)village and city (lists their occupations also). It also lists places of interest: churches, businesses, post offices, restaurants, etc. Before I left I made a list of all the people in my database that were born or died in MI and, lo and behold, almost all of their surnames are also listed in Lapeer County! This is something that I'm finding to be true in every place Hoisingtons went: Hoisingtons married cousins OR neighbors of cousins OR cousins of neighbors. Also, in Michigan, a lot of the people who settled there were from VT and NY and, later, OH. So, if you have someone from one of these states that is "missing", let me know and I'll check. If you're into Washtenaw County genealogy, that's the place to go. 2nd BTW, I tried setting the list to "reply to list" so it wouldn't be such a pain to post, but couldn't get through to Rootsweb. I'll introduce myself next to all. My name is James Stanley Hoisington, I was born July 2, 1947 in Kirkwood MO. The forth child of Ernest Stanley & Lillian Margaret Hoisington (7 kids all together), my father was a carpenter and owned his own company for awhile and my mother was in the employee of Senator S. Symington of Missouri. When I was 14 years old we moved from the city to the country and we loved it. I married Patricia Ann Hewitt Brooks in April of 1974, she had two children Eric Mathew and Stephanie Ann Brooks, we had one child in Dec. 1975, a son we called James Patrick (should have named him Patrick James as she did all the work having him). He's 21 years old now and is following in his old mans footsteps by becoming a Fire Fighter / Paramedic. I became a Fire Fighter in 1969 after trying to find myself, (never really was lost, just liked to travel) for several years, hitchhiked across country twice, and saw a lot of our beautiful countryside. We settled in Manchester, MO. where I still work, (lived there for 19 years) now live in St. Peters, MO. next to the golf course. I enjoy golf and fishing. We share our home with a dog named Rascal, (because he is one ) and a parrot. And like Harriette, I'm getting old myself. Was invited to join AARP. (are they telling me something?) Did you know that Senior Citizens are the leading carriers of AIDS: Hearing AIDS, Roll AIDS, Walking AIDS, Medical AIDS, Government AIDS and most of all Monetary AIDS to their children! THE GOLDEN YEARS HAVE COME AT LAST I cannot see, I cannot pee, I cannot chew, I cannot screw My memory shrinks, My hearing stinks. No sense of smell, I look like hell. My body's drooping, Got trouble pooping. So the Golden Years have come at LAST Well, the Golden Years can kiss my ASS. Author unknown. I only started looking into my past when I got on the Internet, found Harriette and here I am. My tree is something like this: James S. / Patricia A. Hewitt (St. Louis) Ernest S. / Lillian M. Fink (Winterset Iowa) John Albert / Ella Stephenson (Winterset Iowa) Charles Henry / Sarah E. Tharp (Des Moines Iowa) Levi Denim / Lydia Dunbar ( Vermont ) Isaac II / Mary Sawyer (Woodstock VT.) Isaac I / Priscilla Denman (Farmington CT.) Joab I / Mary Boardman (Farmington CT.) John III / Sarah Templar // Mary Smith The rest were all the other Johns. That's about it for this Hoisington, not much to write about. My name is Birdie Lee (Totty) McNutt, I was born Dec. 8, 1941 in Wynnewood, OK, yeah! I'm an "Okie". ( (:) transplanted in Texas. My Family went to California in 1947, in what we, my Bro & Sisters, called the "Grapes of Wrath" period. There was my Aunt Vera Mae Hoisington, her husband Clifton R. Fain, My dad Vernon Totty, mother Lorena P. Hoisington and four of us Totty kids. All in a Pickup truck and small trailer with everything we owned!! We took turns riding in the back of the pickup which Dad had rigged up with a Tarp for protection, "I somtimes still wonder, how we did it" I still have allergies to truck fumes til this day!, but love travelling. We lived in Calif and were "Army brats" until Aug of 1958, when we loaded up everything and moved all of us kids, (total kids being 9 now) and Mom back to Oklahoma, while Dad was off to Germany. Mom & Dad had a total of 11 children, two dying at birth. My dad divorced my Mom after 23 years and 11 kids to marry a little German "lady" he met while overseas. My Mom never fully recovered from that heartbreak. No, hard feelings with my Dad though on my part, we are very close. My mom died at age 62 and my dad is still living, with his 2nd wife, in OK. I graduated from High School in Ok, went through Nurses training, and joined the medical profession for a short while, like my Aunt Vera and my grandmother Birdie Lorena Hoisington, they both being Nurses aides and me a LPN(LVN). First marriage? was to Clayton Allen SACKETT, got an annulment after eight months of Marriage? (he was a bigamist!, already had one wife and married the third after me), one child was born from this union. After that big mistake, I married Wayne Thomas McNUTT in Ok. and had two more children. 1)Glenn Allen(Sackett) McNutt b: 1962, 2) David Wayne McNutt b 1963 and Sandra Inez (McNutt) Cress b: 1967. I have 5 grandchildren; 2 girls by Glen and Sheri (STUTTS) McNutt 1) Laura A. & 2) Nicole L. McNutt. Sandra and Nathan CRESS had two boys 1) Nathaniel James Cress, 2) Nicholas Wayne Cress & one dau. 3) Autum Skye Cress. My grandchildren are not spoiled one little bit,((:), they are spoiled a whole LOT and I love it!!! My husband has his own business as a General Contrator and is the best Carpenter in Texas according to all his Dallas Texas customers. I also agree! Me, I never made it as a "Nurse", was too sympathetic!!!, so I went into the Insurance business, for total of 25 years. I am an "Artist", coming by it naturally from my grandmother Birdie Hoisington. I dabble in all mediums of Art and have sold a few painting's etc. Love western art, American Indian Art, Portrait, (people and animal) Art. I am now a devoted Genealogist, can't seem to get away from this little box in front of me. Am retired?, sorta, I take care of the Office end of my husband's business, which sure takes up my valuable genealogy research time((:). ENOUGH said. I found them and will send the copies Monday. And Bonnie, you were asking about "history of" books for Vermont. Well, last MAY I pulled info on the following books & films in the Family History Library Catalog for Rutland and Windsor Counties: "The History of Woodstock, Vermont" by Henry Swan Dana Boston: Hougton, Mifflin, and Co. 1889 Film: 1033915, Item 5 "The History of Woodstock, Vermont, 1890-1983" by Peter S. Verlina and (Titus) Vespacian are two different people. Enough similarities between the two to get very confusing, though. According to what I have, Vespacian was b. 8 Jun 1763 in Berlin CT and died 21 May 1841 in Plymouth MI. He married Hannah Wood. His parents were John III of Southington and Mary Smith. Verlina was born 1765 in Windsor VT and died 10 Apr 1847 in Hillsdale Co. MI. He married Hannah Green. His parents were Major Joab Hoisington and Mary Boardman. Even though Vespacian and Verlina were born about the same time, they are of different generations. Verlina was a son of Joab, who was a son of John III's first marriage to Sarah Templar. Vespacian was a son of John III's second marriage to Mary Smith. I believe that this makes Vespacian the half-uncle of Verlina, even though he's only 2 years older. (And correct me if I'm wrong, somebody, I'm not very good at this. I really had to draw little boxes and lines and erase a couple of times to get that one!) John III had 13 children that I know about, the first one born in 1736 when he was 23 and the last one was born in 1767 when he was 54. However, as we saw with John III, even 54 is not too old. Which brings up the fact that Chauncy is the only child attributed to Phillip. It's quite possible that Chauncy was one of many unrecorded children and possibly by a second wife. Phillip's marriage at 42 in 1846 would be quite old for a first marriage. Anybody want to dig around in the Ellisburg NY records for a first marriage?
